FORT MCCLARY STATE HISTORIC SITE,

Fort McClary stood to protect approaches to the Piscataqua River at the southern gateway to Kittery, Maine, for more than 275 years. The fort served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I and is a prime example of the changes in the military architecture and technology that occurred over the years. The site is open Memorial Day through Sept. 30. |
WENTWORTH-COOLIDGE MANSION HISTORIC SITE

New Hampshire's first royal governor, Benning Wentworth, lived in this 40-room mansion from 1741 to 1767. Overlooking Little Harbor, the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion is one of the most outstanding homes remaining from the Colonial era. Inside, visitors will find some of the finest colonial wood carvings in America. The site is open mid-May to mid-Oct. |
JACKSON HOUSE

In 1924 the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities acquired this historic home from a member of the seventh generation of Jackson's to live there.
The 17th –century structure, built by Richard Jackson, resembles English post-medieval architecture, but is notably American in its use of wood. Call for hours and days of operation. |

Fort Stark, named in honor of Commander John Stark, who led the New Hampshire forces at the Battle of Bennington – was a military training facility for more than 200 years. The 10-acre site overlooks the Piscataqua River, Little Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean and is available for self guided tours. |

Built on the Piscataqua River above lively seaport wharves in 1763, the Moffatt-Ladd House is a splendid example of a successful merchant's home. William Wipple, one of three New Hampshire signers of the Declaration of Independence, lived here with his wife Katherine until his death. Tours of the home and grounds area available. Saint John's Church has some interesting artifacts available for view. Guests will find one of the few remaining "Vinegar" Bibles – named because of the misprint that reads "Parable of the Vinegar" instead of "Parable of the Vineyard." Also here: a Brattle organ, considered to be the oldest operative pipe organ in the nation, and the Steeple Bell that was captured in 1745 at the battle of Louisborg, Nova Scotia. |

The 1718 Sayward-Wheeler House mirrors the fortunes of a coastal village in the transition from trade to tourism. Original furnishings and family portraits remain in the home today. GOVERNOR JOHN LANGDON HOUSE

This spectacular Portsmouth home was built in 1784 by three-term governor of New Hampshire, Revolutionary leader and signer of the United States Constitution, John Langdon. The family home was used to entertain special guest, including George Washington, who visited in 1789. Inside, elaborate wood carvings adorn the walls. Outside, the garden features a rose and grape arbor, a pavilion and restored perennial beds. The house id open Fri – Sun, from June1 to Oct. 15. |
RUNDLET-MAY HOUSE

The Rundlet-May House was built in 1807 by wealthy textile merchant James Rundet and is a proclamation of his financial success and interest in technology. Inside the well-manicured home, visitors will find fine wallpapers imported from England and furniture made by local craftsmen. The kitchen boasts a Rumford roaster and a Rumford range. There's also an elaborate venting system that services a smoke room on the third floor, an indoor well and one of the first coal-fired heating systems. Call for hours and days of operation. |
